Domains 101

Domain names are the Internet’s version of real estate.  A good domain name ranks high in the search engine and is like that perfect prime corner spot to place your storefront on.  The internet works much like everything else – location, location, location.

There are many other factors to consider in choosing a domain name.   There are obvious factors such as demand, brand protection or vanity.  There are also aesthetics – how short is it, how easy to spell, how memorable, etc.  Then there are the SEO (search engine optimization) considerations.

You can have multiple domain names and that does not mean you need multiple sites.  You can point the domain names to one site.  We typically recommend having two or more domain names.  One should be chosen for keyword search term / SEO purposes and another for aesthetic purposes (printing on business cards, remembering, etc).

If a web site is ranked higher on Google it typically gets more traffic.  If you are trying to be found on Google this is obviously important.  Having a highly ranked site can mean a large difference in revenues.  Part of the reasons a site gets ranked high are due to domain considerations.

Things Google considers about a domain in it’s rankings:

  • Age of domain.  An older domain name gets more credit toward rankings than a new domain.  Google basically likes a company that’s been around awhile.
  • Domain extension.  A .com tends to get more ranking credit than a .net for instance.
  • Length of registration.  If your domain doesn’t expire for 10 years vs. 1 year, Google gives more credit in rankings.
  • Keywords.  A domain with the keywords the user typed into search will rank higher than one without those keywords.  For instance, a user searches on “Dallas Dentist”, it would be great if you owned the domain name www.dallasdentist.com.
  • Number of sites linking to your domain name – this is probably one of the most important factors in rankings.  Many of our domain names already have in-links built into them which increases their rankings and potential rankings.

There are of course hundreds of other factors considered in a site’s rankings, but a good domain with SEO factors behind it can help provide the edge in beating out the competition.

We factor many of these items into our domain pricing.  We consider the in-links to a domain, it’s demand, it’s age and much more.  You can also visit our FAQ.
